A birthday party and a backyard project

Our Valentine's Day is always usurped by Kate's birthday on the 15th. Although I must give Shawn the credit he truly deserves for being a great Valentine. I cringe, reading about my bloggy friends whose husbands won't DO SOMETHING for them on Valentine's Day. It is literally so easy!! Why can't they just....? I don't get it, I hate it for them, and I am so lucky. (I do always feel some solidarity with the idea of buying myself chocolates, because YUM. However, with birthday cake in the house I rarely need/want to add more sweets.)

For Kate's 13th birthday this year, I had the idea of a backyard fire-pit birthday. It would keep things mostly Covid-compliant (with friends she sees at school already, and being outside), we wouldn't have to bother the girls (teens!), they could just do their thing, and I thought Kate liked the idea of a campfire, sweater-weather theme.

I got that part wrong, apparently -- about 3 days before the party she told me she'd never "OK'd" that idea -- but it didn't matter because the weather was rainy and gross for the 3 days surrounding the party, anyway. So no fire-pit.

In the end, 5 friends DID come over, and they did spend quite a bit of time outdoors in our driveway, and on the trampoline. The rain had stopped by the day-of, but the ground was still soggy/muddy. As for activities, instead of roasting marshmallows, they played a few indoor games, which Kate herself devised and created. She wrapped little gifties and then rolled them into a huge Saran-wrap ball, which they then took turns unravelling to the throwing of dice -- you know this game, right?

She also put candy into a bunch of balloons and blew them up; these served 2 purposes. One, she threw them all over the floor of our living room for surprisingly festive yet easy decor. And two, the girls at some point loudly stomped them all to pop them and reveal the candy. Easy peasy!

I was not needed to help with either of these activities. In fact, the rest of us were sort-of banished from the main area of the house. Hmph. Not sure how I felt about that, except this one feeling: A BASEMENT or media room would SURE BE helpful in times like these. We have neither. This was why I wanted the backyard situation. Oh well! I provided lots of snacks, and we were allowed to attend the present-unwrapping and birthday cake portions of the evening, and the whole thing was a pretty big success, I believe. She even thanked me. ;)

In the backyard, we were planning to complete a long-wished-for project to make the party landscape just *chef's kiss* perfect. We have all the materials, now we just need a non-rainy weekend, to finish it up. It's going to look somewhat like this:

planters
(Not our house; but we bought similar buckets, 4x4s and lights)

I can't wait. I'm grateful Shawn took this on and really think that it's going to make a useful, pretty "living space" outside. We're lucky that Atlanta weather is usually really good for outdoor living -- I'm hoping for lots of use of this area in spring and maybe even summer (haha, it will be way too hot in summer). I also bought 4 adirondack chairs (plastic ones, not the expensive kind), and am planning to have pretty, colorful cushions to liven them up a bit. I'll try to remember to take pictures.

On to some dinner menus! My 2021 planner has a little area for each day, called "Tonight:" and it's a perfect spot to record what we've had. Some delicious ideas for you from our last couple of weeks:

Southwest Sausage & Rice Skillet (hellofresh) - My crew doesn't care for chicken sausage, so I used regular pork.

Chicken Soft Tacos in the crock-pot - Couldn't be easier. A little too juicy, if I'm honest, but we used all of this in burritos and quesadillas in the week following, and everyone enjoyed it.

This was a few weeks ago: BBQ Salmon Bowls w/Mango-Avocado Salsa -- and wow, was it delicious! Kate has recently discovered avocado -- the cool kids on TikTok made her want to try avocado toast, lol -- so it was a big hit.

Kate's Birthday Choice: Spaghetti Carbonara with a Caesar salad kit and garlic breadsticks: YUM. A little cholesterol-heavy, especially when finished with a piece of birthday cake (just a little)! The day after, I ate oatmeal, raw vegetables, and drank a ton of water to atone.

Tonight: Southern Vegetable Plate: Mashed potatoes, corn, mac and cheese, and these green beans. Yikes, I'd better start them right now. This meal brought to you by no-meat Ash Wednesday. Happy Lent! I'm giving up fast food.

Helpful ;)

I have to tell a small, funny tale about Alex. He is SUCH a helpful kid, always willing to do whatever we ask him to do -- which frequently means he's tasked with taking meat out of the freezer in the morning, because he's last to leave home on school days, and I always forget to do it myself.

Yesterday I texted him and said, "There's some chicken in freezer, cut into chunks in a Ziploc -- can u put it in the fridge pls?"

"Yeah"

"Thank you xoxo"

"No prob"

And I didn't think another thing about it. I was planning to make these pretzel-coated chicken nuggets, because I find myself with a ton of pretzels* and no one in my house actually LIKES pretzels.

Imagine my surprise when I got home, and found a Ziploc bag of raspberries in the fridge, and my chicken still solid as a rock in the freezer!

He said he just grabbed the closest Ziploc he could find, and "they looked like they were in chunks, so I assumed it was the right one!"

... We had leftover Easter pork tenderloin, instead. ;)

Raspberries.

Our Easter Sunday dinner was so fun. The neighbors came over, and offered to bring both mashed potatoes and a fruit tray with "fluffy dip" (cream cheese and whipped cream and sugar, YUM). Those contributions reduced my stress level significantly, and it was an otherwise easy meal for me to arrange and prepare:

Cheese and crackers for a small hors d'oeuvre (I forgot to slice the summer sausage)
Pork Tenderloin
Sweet and Sour Green Beans (made the day before)
Bacon-Jalepeno Deviled Eggs (made the day before)
Heat and serve rolls
Peach mimosas (Simply Peach + Stella Rosa Peach)
Strawberry lemonade for the kids
3-ingredient Lemon Cake, which Kate and their daughter, A., decorated with sprinkles in the shape of a cross, so smart and sweet!

They came over at 3:00, we ate ate 3:30, and sadly they had to leave by 5:30 because Mr. Neighbor had to go to the airport for a month-long business trip (military). BUT! This was actually good, because I wouldn't have known what to do if they'd stayed and stayed. Get out the Uno cards? Watch a movie? Sit and talk (for 4 hours??) They kept apologizing but it was a huge relief. We cleaned up, then we did watch a movie slash snooze, and then had more cake for "dinner" around 8:00. Perfect holiday, IMO.

Other dinners planned for this week:
(M - Penne pasta casserole with ground turkey and sausage, red sauce and mozzarella)
W - Pretzel chicken nuggets! Pasta salad with veggies
Th - Oven Chicken Fajitas
F - Pizza, lovingly picked up on the way home from work

I'm at work today with a TON of new tasks, so I'd better get to it.

But here we are on Sunday (I do not care for this photo of me - for one thing, it doesn't show the prettiest part of the dress, which is the bright orange hem and sleeve cuffs):

*So many pretzels because Pinterest encouraged me to make these for Easter. They weren't even a Pinterest-Fail! Aren't they the cutest? I always buy pastel M&Ms anyway, so it was fun, and helped me occupy Kate while she was out of school. Girl always needs a crafty project!

Happiness is a Birthday Party

I hope Shawn enjoyed the birthday party as much as I did, and as much as he deserved to. I think it came off beautifully, thanks to all the help I had from kids, parents, mother-in-law, and the guest of honor himself.

I will admit to a bit of pre-party stress, just wondering how in the world I would get it all done before 6:30 p.m., the published start time. However, I woke up early enough to my yoga workout for the day, and to have coffee/breakfast in relative quiet, and I used that time to Make A List, which was critical. For sure it helped my mood, to start out in a peaceful way. But man, I had everything on that list:

  • Publix - pick up cake and deli tray (and other food) 10 a.m.
  • call in wings order - 11 a.m.
  • yoga
  • make taco dip
  • make tea
  • decorate dining room table
  • cut vegetables
  • move cats' food and litter box to upstairs bathroom
  • sweep hallway
  • unload dishwasher
  • meatballs in crock pot 3 p.m.
  • buy beer, wine, Ranch dip I forgot, and pick up wings - 4 p.m. SHAWN (thank you, honey!)
  • makeup/get dressed
  • clean bathroom downstairs (whoops, I just realized I never actually did this one)

It was so soothing to check things off the list. Alex went with me to Publix and kept me sane ("Don't you think we need another bag of another kind of chips??" ..."uh, I think we're good, Mom.") Sweet Kate helped me with decorating - she wanted so much to HELP. So I let her write the letters on the Pinterest-y banner (bought from Party City, definitely not crafty enough to make myself!) and it turned out super cute.

She also sprinkled confetti on the table after I'd put out the tablecloth, and hung up little golden spiral-y streamers on the ceiling with masking tape.

After that she kept begging me, from about 2:00 pm until 6:00, to put out the food, and I had to keep fending her off. Bread and cheese do not sit well for that long, I had to tell her. Again.

The weather was terrible. The coworkers, many of them, were sick and texted to say they couldn't make it after all. We joked that if it was just us 7, well, we'd have a lot of taco dip and beer to enjoy and we'd change back into our comfy pants and fuzzy socks. But then people DID show up, and even brought sweet and funny gifts, and said lovely things and ate some of the food (not all, we have a LOT of food leftover), and drank wine and beer and tea and water and had side conversations and told good stories.

All in all, I was proud of us, and glad my parents and his mom came in from out of town, and it felt special. I hope it did for him, too. This was a fun moment, and probably a good indication:

Pre-WLC dinners this week, and party planning

It's a week of "Last Suppers" for me, before the Whole Life Challenge begins again next Saturday. Then it will be no bread, no cheese, no sugar for 6 weeks.

Tonight, Monday: Lemon Butter Chicken Strips, rice and broccoli. This is a super-easy, pantry items meal. I've made it once before and the kids even liked it. If I have time I'll throw together some cornbread muffins to accompany this.

Tuesday: Cheeseburgers and potato salad. In the dead of winter, but who cares. We don't have snow like a lot of the country, but it's been cold so a "dreaming of summer/backyard" kind of dinner sounds good.

Wednesday: Lag Liv's Mexican rice with Fritos Scoops. (See? I'm really getting into this celebration of the last junk food of January.) ;)

Thursday: Mini pizzas. I have Canadian bacon and pineapple, which I'm happy to report is Kate's favorite pizza topping. She has good taste.

Friday: Shredded BBQ pork in the crock pot, served on King's Hawaiian rolls with coleslaw and chips, and possibly fruit salad. My parents are due to arrive in town that day, again, because Shawn's 50th birthday party is the following night! My MIL will also be with us, driving up from Savannah. I hope there's enough food! I think there will be.

I have more shopping to do this week. Today, plates, napkins, utensils and other fun things you can find at Party City. I've ordered a deli tray and a cake (decided against cupcakes for fear they were too girly; silly I know, but that's the deal) and the guest list is just about confirmed with 19 attendees including us. Most are from his office, which seems appropriate.

Before on the left, After on the right
In other party prep, this past weekend we recovered our kitchen chairs! They were looking tattered and gross. Happy to report it wasn't a difficult project, once we borrowed a staple gun. If you're ever thinking you could try recovering chairs, you're right. It's easy. Thank you to Shawn for doing the hard work of pulling the thick fabric tightly. I was very impressed with his DIY aplomb and his willingness to go to Joann Fabrics with me. When it was finished, Kate asked, "I guess I can't wipe my hands on them anymore?" NO, darling almost-ELEVEN-year-old, you cannot. smh. (This is the child who's being resistant to attending The Social Class (manners, etiquette, social dance for middleschoolers in our area). Sigh. But she NEEEEEEEDS The Social Class!)

I'm trying to trust that Saturday will all come together as it's meant to, and that I'll be calm and efficient. That morning, Kate has a basketball game across town. Not ideal. I haven't decided if SHE will skip it, but I'm certain I will.

Just Say No to Meetings (Yes to Parties)

There is a sales meeting happening in my company this week and for the first time in a really long time, I am NOT attending! Woot! I have so much work to do here. I am not in sales, but marketing does indeed crossover with sales, so typically I am required to go, when it is held here in our U.S. headquarters city. However, this year they decided to travel to Orlando, and to keep the office staff travelers to a minimum, and that is FINE by ME.

I also just declined a January meeting of the global marketing team, which will be held in Germany. WHY would I do that, you ask? I mean, free trip to Germany! I'll tell you why: the meeting is scheduled for the day of my Dear Husband's 50th birthday. And I am a loving wife. (It also happens to be a company holiday and who wants to work on a free day off??)

It's not that Shawn cares, actually -- he's told me several times that "it's just another day." But I care. Last time I went to Germany, I left town on Alex's birthday -- what is it with this company and my family's special days?! I hated leaving that day (although I feel like we might have had cake the night before, and he opened presents that morning before I left), but husband's 50th, I mean... that's a significant milestone. A few years back, he planned a very sweet surprise 40th birthday party for me, and I want to plan a party for him this year. I haven't done that since he turned 35 (!), because kids. Yes, we always celebrate adult birthdays as a family, but I'm setting a goal this year to host more dinners at our house anyway, so this is going to be the first one of Q1, 2019.

Does Shawn even want a party? He says he doesn't need one, but if it were me, I think I'd want someone to have a to-do for me on my 50th. And besides, I know he ENJOYS a good party, if it isn't too much trouble to get there (check) and he has people to talk to (check, it will only be people he likes)! So I say it's a go.

I'm thinking about the Saturday before his Monday birthday, maybe late afternoon until ? -- and an all-appetizers, all-party-foods kind of menu. I'm very excited about that, and one of the things I've put into my new planner is a list of food ideas. Jalepeno poppers, chips and dips, wings, shrimp if I'm going "fancy."

Here's where input would be helpful:
  • Should I do a cake, or cupcakes? Cupcakes would be infinitely easier if I could get them (make them?) fancy enough... (aaaaand I just opened another tab and clicked on Pinterest. I see a new Board in my future)
  • Should we have one special drink, or perhaps a vodka bar (his favorite spirit) with mixer options? Is that even a thing? I've seen bourbon bars, but not vodka.
  • Do I have the right serving space for a vodka bar?
  • What will we do about kids? Should other people's kids be invited? Maybe not? But will their parents be offended if our kids are there?
  • I suppose I should take Christmas down before this party on Jan 19th... will we be able to manage that and clean the house?! Ha!
Well, I have a while, yet. A short while, and a busy one, with Christmas -- and guests at our house, yay! -- in the mix. Wish me luck.

Post-Party High

We did it -- invited the new neighbors over for dinner. Yay! I was nervous -- what if they don't like us? -- but as it turns out we share a lot of interests. Shawn and Mr. Neighbor geeked out about Marvel and Star Wars and gadgets, and Mrs. Neighbor and I talked PTA and working motherhood (she's not, now, but is anxious to go back sometime after her Baby #2 arrives this summer - probably working at home, lucky dog). I heard a lot of laughter from the kids, too. And on a related note, their daughter, age 8, taught Kate age 10 to ride a bike this weekend! Ha! So now we're in the market for a used bike for Kate. ;)

I tried to keep dinner simple and not get crazy or stressed, because that's no fun for anyone. And it helped that it was Cleaning Weekend anyway, and we got the downstairs nicely vacuumed and dusted, and rearranged some furniture on Saturday. We had all the laundry finished and folded (thx, Shawn!) at 6:25 pm and they were due to arrive at 6:30! Everything came together beautifully.

For food, I ordered 2 pounds of pulled pork from a BBQ place, and made all the other sides. Hashbrown Casserole in the Crockpot (yum), coleslaw, Jim N Nick's cheddar biscuits, and watermelon. These Strawberry Brownies for dessert (and I resisted eating one).

This meal was not WLC compliant! Nor was my Saturday-night-after-Mass, celebratory-WLC-is-over Mexican food at Huey Luey's! I had a chimichanga of all things (not as satisfying as a cheese enchilada would have been, but they didn't have those), and lots of chips and queso. And a margarita. It was nice to be "off-challenge," and I enjoyed it all. I am trying to be back on track for the work week as much as possible, because I didn't lose many pounds during the challenge, which is a bummer. But I think I've said, my pants fit better and I lost inches. We'll see how well I stick to it in the "off" period. I don't want to lose what little progress I made. Stupid dieting. Why do I love food (read: bread and cheese) so much? And here's a tip from me to you: Staying away from sugar does NOT take away the craving for it. I totally believe in having less sugar/fewer carbs, but I still love/want them. Deprivation has never "cured" me.

The spring weather makes everything seem lighter and happier, too, I think. It's still cold in the mornings/evenings, but this weekend was just lovely in the middle of the day. Birds are singing, sun is shining! That has been so nice, after such a lot of rain  and gray days lately (which I think are set to return this week, boo).

I'm trying NOT to let my mood be swung by a required weekend business trip coming up. It's a trip to Vegas, and actually shouldn't be HARD or anything -- I'm just going to listen, observe, and learn in some conference sessions. I don't necessarily have to shmooze or sell anything, and I can go to my hotel room as soon as I like after the conference ends. But it's over the weekend, and I have to travel there on my own. So funny -- something I used to really want to do, when I was in my twenties, was travel for work by myself. It felt so grown up. I'll have to remember that instead of grumbling about the hassle of it, on Friday. I think the good news is that I get to take 2 days off that next week, to make up for having to work over a weekend. So I need to ask about those -- something else to look forward to. :)

Party 3 of 3 in a row

I'm thinking of these Monday-morning blog posts like gas-pedal-pumping on an older car — a necessary step to get her going.

Despite having a new, clean desk/cubicle, work's all the same, same, same. Yesterday I was thinking, do all marketers just eventually run out of ideas? Can I use that logic to switch careers and become something else entirely, please? I have run out. All the marketing speakers and thought-leaders are saying now, to copy the work of others. They mean for you to use your own photos/taglines/etc., but do just go ahead and use other peoples' ideas. It's okay now. See something that works, online? Do the same thing. Nothing new under the sun, why bother even trying?

- - - - - - -

Over the weekend, on Saturday night, I hosted the 3rd party of three that were planned for this fall: Moms' Night In. Out, really, because we sat outside on the back porch in pretty, pretty weather, finally!, at the patio table with umbrella that Shawn bought me (us), that I love. I went out Saturday morning to buy some red mums and 2 little succulents plants, to spruce up the very utilitarian metal shelf we have out there. It helped 100%, along with a pretty candle lantern from Pier 1 on the table. (And yes, I will do my best to take care of the plants, Darling Husband. They'll probably have to move where they can feel the sun for best results, but see? I've already looked up "how to care for fall mums.")

Everyone I invited came to the party, and they all brought fun party foods and wine. Lots of different dips and crackers and even goat cheeses (YUM), salads and several pumpkin-y treats since IT'S OCTOBER! (what?!). Conversation was lively, of course, including gossip about who may be pregnant again, and teasing the PTO president about which snot-nosed punk might have pulled the fire alarm two weeks ago (she wouldn't budge). I thoroughly enjoyed it all, from the prep (lighting candles, listening to my Bruce Hornsby Pandora station) to the clean-up — no, really! — and am, again, grateful to Shawn and the kids who let me kick them out of the house for a while. I hope I was fully present to my friends. It all feels like kind-of a blur, now, but I think I had a great time. And no, I only had 2 glasses of wine, so it's not that -- it's just, various hostess duties kept me from sitting in any one place too long, I think, so I never quite relaxed. But I did laugh a lot, and I feel so comfortable with all those ladies, and I think they appreciated the time together — it had been a while. All good.

I think I'm all filled up on hostessing for now. Well, except we did talk about inviting Andy and Pam over for Sunday football watching one day soon. We totally should. ;)

This week for dinner:

Sunday: Crock pot BBQ meatballs, egg noodles, and green beans/potatoes in sauce (from the frozen aisle, and were a disappointment)
Monday: Spaghetti w/meat sauce, garlic toast and a Caesar salad
Tuesday: Chick Fil A or Zaxby's or Jimmy John's, because it's Kate's first basketball practice at 6pm and then gymnastics at 7:30, and HOW are we going to add something to the schedule?! By eating fast food.
Wednesday: Hate to tell you this, honey, but it's going to be ham steaks. The kids eat it and we haven't had it in a long time. With corn and mashed potatoes. And you're cooking. ;) Love ya, mean it.
Thursday: Pizza bake. Fruit salad. Carrrrrrbs.
Friday: I get a half-day off, so I can cook something delicious with chicken thighs, I hope. No... wait, just remembered, there's a party at school that night to celebrate the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award. Woo hoo! Kitchen is closed Friday night!

Two best things

Two of the best things my sis and I have done together, lately:
Dad's surprise 70th birthday party 5 years ago, and Mom's less-surprising but also amazing 70th birthday party this past weekend! :)

I'm going to tell you about this weekend. We had fun surprising Mom via email, that we both planned to come to Florida to celebrate with her. We knew she wouldn't want us to just show up one Saturday, especially if she already had plans for a pedicure or a DAR meeting or something, and then bring 25 people to her house with no warning. So we told her in August, I think. Something to look forward to!

We made lots of yummy food after a fun sisters' grocery-store run (and liquor-store run) Saturday morning:
  • Sweet Potato and Bacon skewers -- as delicious as they sound! Sprinkled w/a brown sugar and cayenne mixture that gave them just the perfect level of sweet/spice!
  • Maple-Bacon Crack -- also delicious and decadent... but these weren't as crispy as the recipe promises. They were soggy and sticky, in fact, and we didn't serve all of them.
  • Green salad w/cranberries and spiced pecans
  • Veggie tray w/hummus AND Ranch, because we're just that crazy
  • Fruit and Cheese
  • Meat and Crackers
  • Rotel dip and chips (it's not a party without them)
  • Turkey Roll-ups w/cream cheese
  • Frozen Mini Corn Dogs for the kids
  • Cake!
And our signature drink, an Apple Pie Moscow Mule that you must try! So delicious! I could have had three of them, I think! (I only had one.) And I'm not usually a MMule fan, I'll admit. But these were light and delicious (apple-flavored vodka!) and now I need my own set of copper mugs!

Of course, it's not all about the food. (Most, but not all.) ;) We had fun with Mom and Dad's friends from next door, our awesome cousins and their spouses, our favorite aunt and uncle, and all of the next generation, too. I feel like I was a sweaty mess (working in the kitchen and chasing the youngest kids), but I had fun. Only person I didn't get a chance to talk with was (as usual) Shawn. We laugh about that a lot, after parties. But then again, I guess we talk to each other most days so it's cool. ;)

Sunday morning the kids got a quick swim in, in the backyard, and then we had to head home. Weekend, you were too short!

But I've been thinking about Time, this morning, after a little stress last night when Kate couldn't fall asleep and I got frustrated because of it. I realized I rely so heavily on my carefully calculated schedule to get through weeknights, that when my plans/schedules get disrupted, it causes me stress. But if I could just LET GO of my arbitrary rules about time, I'd be better off (and a better mom). Because all time is limited... and all time is also infinite. We have nothing but time. Sure, it HELPS me to get a full night's rest (I really like getting 7 hours exactly)... but if my lunchbox-prep gets pushed later than I'd like, for whatever reason, it's not going to kill me (unless it becomes a bad habit)... I should let time run, do what needs doing, in whatever time it takes, and just TRUST that God will give me what I need to get through being tired the next day. For example. I have more thinking to do about this, but it is a welcome insight.

Anyway, our time together over the weekend was much too short, but it was just what it was meant to be, and what we were given, and therefore it was perfect. :)

Love you, Mom. Happy birthday tomorrow.

Weekend Recap - So Much To Remember!

Morning/Magazines

Today's morning rush was a little bit XTREME, mostly because I made the conscious decision not to prep lunchboxes last night. First time this year! But also because it is time, once again, for the school's magazine drive bullshit, and I had not yet read any of the instructions (naturally, this year they've "changed it up!" meaning the procedures are slightly different than the last EIGHT years we've done it) nor placed any orders ...and today was the first turn-in day and don'tcha know, the kids want their plastic keychain prizes.

I am FINALLY WEARY of this particular fundraiser. WHY does it need to be so complicated?? Several turn-in-days, and prizes they can ONLY get - like an Out of Uniform Pass which everyone wants - if they turn in X orders on X day, and if you also order this SPECIAL item you get DOUBLE prize points, but it can't be ordered online like everything else, you have to turn in a form and money by hand... and also can anyone volunteer to donate magazine subscriptions to the Libary slash come in and help count orders?!

Can't we just have a box of chocolate bars? Those suckers seem to sell themselves.

Anyway, if any of you reading this is kind enough to place an order (MOM, thank you), my prize-obsessed kids and I thank you. I asked Alex last week if he was ready to be "over" the prizes yet. (I think last year it was plastic duck keychains, the kids all collect them and wear them around all week). He had a hard time answering and was willing to consider letting Kate take all the orders this year. But when it came down to it this morning, he waffled. I guess the lanyard is a bit of a status symbol, still. Maybe a maximum of one duck will be just ironic enough to be cool in 7th grade? Let's hope. Sigh.

The main reason I wanted to remember this morning, though, was that the kids HELPED OUT. They made their lunches (...ish. Kate put a sandwich in her lunchbox and when I asked her if she grabbed a drink or anything else, she made big eyes at me like, "I was supposed to do ALL of that?" but still...)! They (Kate) got ready on their own! Kate didn't require me to French braid her hair, for once! It was lovely and magical.

Earrings

Kate and I had a doozy of a time last night trying to replace her piercing earrings. Her 3 weeks (accelerated) probation period had ended and she was SUPER eager to put in new ones. But lo and behold, those ears are a little SORE. And finding the hole in the back was not easy. She cried and cried and I kept my cool (mostly), but when you start a process like this before 8, and are still not finished at 8:56, it's a LITTLE frustrating. She finally let me -- FINALLY -- touch the earring and I found the back hole with no problem. And with one side done (!) we called it a night. *wide eyes* We have to do it again tonight and I just can't wait.

Bless her heart.

Cousins

Ohhhhhh, but we had a fabulous weekend. The Cousins came to visit and we hosted a party Saturday night (meaning we prepped most of the day Saturday, when we weren't singing for a wedding (me) or taking the kids to Kennesaw Mountain, (thanks Shawn)!!), then went to Mass and a Braves game on Sunday. It was all awesome. For the party I made a triple recipe of chili, with white rice or egg noodles to choose from, a veggie tray with Ranch dip, cut watermelon for the kids, and one of the creamy corn dips you find on Pinterest, called "Crack Dip" (I hate the name). We also made Rice Krispie treats for dessert, and took a cue from my parents and had Bluebell ice cream cups for the kids, too. They were in hog heaven -- they ran around the backyard, mostly, and the adults drank a little wine and were able to have interesting conversations.

I was just so thrilled to have a party. I mean, yes it's a lot of work, but it just filled me up with happiness to have  family there. And to be a hostess - my inner Martha was content. I don't know if it's the act of serving I like, or subconsciously, the compliments I get about a nice dinner, pretty home, or what, but it satisfies me. I always go back to this concept, too, which stirred my heart when I first read about it. Simple meals, not-pristine homes, TIME TOGETHER with people we love. That's what I like my weekends to be about. (some weekends, I should clarify!)

Seeing the Braves play was icing on the cake. Especially because they won (and I had a new team t-shirt to wear, ha)! It wasn't hot outside, we had great seats, all the kids were sooo well-behaved, and I've loved that team (and that stadium) for a long time now. Because of a rain delay, we even got to watch a whole documentary on the big screen, about the 1990s when the Braves were on top! It was the best. Exhausting, and I fear Shawn's coming down with something, but so fun all around.

Oooh, plans!

Lots of stuff going on this week and next, so what better than to waste precious half-hours here telling a few people and my future self about it?! Hee.

1. The Pinewood Derby was supposed to have been this weekend -- our very last Cub Scouting event -- but it was postponed until next weekend because there was a very small threat of snow and ice. We no longer take those threats lightly in metro ATL! So, next weekend, fine, but now we have that, which usually lasts from 7:30 a.m. check-in until 3:00 p.m. clean-up, and then Alex's very first piano recital, at 4:00 p.m.! Whee! Should be a fun day. I hope the PWD finishes on time. I'm so, so excited about the recital. The kids have never even attended a music recital, much less participated. I'm nervous for him, and proud of him, already and all at once. He'll play two little pieces.

2. Kate had tummy trouble all weekend. She did nothing but lie on the couch Sat., and Sun., and chose to stay home from school today (totally legit, she did have a fever last night). It was Shawn's turn so she's been at his office, charming everyone and being good watching "Frienemies" on the iPad. She does feel better, I think, but is pretty weak from not having eaten anything much for 2 days. It isn't really worth mentioning except that they're calling for possible snow again overnight, so I'm worried she'll have ANOTHER day off school tomorrow. We'll see. The snow days are fine until they combine with sick-days. Then I start to get fretful for some reason. Like I can prevent snow-days! OR sickness. Dumb. Anyway, it's good that Shawn and I can share the sick-day responsibilities, and that I have a laptop.

3. The Gumbo party is happening! In my Mom's family we called it "Sacrificial Gumbo" because it was SOOOO TERRIBLE to have to have no meat. Ha ha. So anyway, I sent an Evite to 5 families yesterday. It took me a while to get up the courage to press "Send," however stupid that is -- and we already have three positive responses! Yay! I think we'll need to set up a card table in the den. It's a real party when you have to set up a card table, amiright?? But luckily, we bought a card table just a couple of weeks ago! (Still need chairs.) Don't worry, I'll put a tablecloth over it.

We want to do a little more decorating before people come over, and obviously a lot of straightening up (Kate's toys/pillows/shoes currently COVER the living room floor) but again, no stress about how the house looks or doesn't look. I'm trying to remember this, a brilliant article I may have already linked to that deserves a second read. There is no need to pressure ourselves to have Pinterest-worthy, Houzz-worthy homes before we host a get-together. Just bring people in. They're coming for the company, and maybe the food, and that's why we're having them -- not to show them our custom valences. (We will likely never have custom valances!) Yes, we'd like to have something on the wall behind our couch -- going to look this week -- and something that fits better, and is in a frame, above our bed, assuming anyone wants a "tour" of the still-new house. And the powder room downstairs could use a little something. Those should be easy enough to find, yes? We can do those.

So I'm planning shrimp gumbo, french bread, Kraft mac-and-cheese for the kids who don't want to even TRY gumbo (...Kate), maybe a veggie tray and a fruit tray, and wine and beer and lemonade. Done. Easy. We'll sit wherever. Some folding chairs in the kitchen to round out the seating options, and I think we'll be good.

I like being the hostess, I learned last weekend at Kate's birthday slumber party. Well, I mean, I've long known it. So now that we're in the house, we're mentally ready, and we actually have friends, I'm forging ahead. More parties! Huzzah!

One to One (1:1) Meeting

New Manager and I had our first 1:1 meeting. (It bothers me very much that a couple of colleagues call these "One on One" meetings..... Uhh, no thank you. Ha!) It went extremely well, to my surprise. She was engaged and listened, took a lot of notes, agreed with me about my "pain points" (she had asked me for those), gave me some great suggestions/tasks, and I feel quite good, now, about having her on board. We talked about schedules and she seems to have not one problem with flex-time, exactly as I'd hoped and imagined she wouldn't (BECAUSE REAL PEOPLE in THE 21st CENTURY DON'T). So thank God.

In the past few weeks, I've been trying to be more analytical and strategic about my job. This maybe is interesting to no one, but our websites' traffic has been the lowest of all our subsidiaries (UK, France, Germany, Austria, etc.) for a couple of months. U.S. was highlighted RED in the spreadsheet! "Critical performer!" ACK. This would not stand, so I've been researching, and SEO-ing, and trying my darndest to pull the numbers up. (And my tactics seem to have worked for January! I feel so proud!) What I've learned is that I REALLY like that stuff. I get deeply involved with it, and time seems to fly. A revelation. I'm so anxious, now, to make analytics and strategy more a part of my daily round.

Group "Meetings:"

Last weekend Shawn and I had two fun dinners with friends. (We have FRIENDS! Sorry, but it's still exciting.) Our favorite group of 5th-grade parents, 8 of us total, went to an expensive-ish restaurant on the night of the school's annual fundraising gala. We boycotted the gala! It was funny, we've declared it a tradition now. And we had SUCH fun. Laughed and laughed.

The next night we'd been invited to the Cubmaster and his wife's house, to plan the boys' last ceremony before they all cross over to Boy Scouts. (Time flies!) They're ...interesting people, maybe not our first choice, but SO nice nonetheless, and we drank white wine and the kids all played happily together, and it was a nice way to spend the spring-like afternoon.

And I'm putting this here so I don't forget: During Lent, we are going to host a Sacrificial Gumbo party on a Friday night. (Seafood gumbo, of course.) Kids and parents. Casual - I don't want to stress about it. In fact, I'm going to hop over to my G-cal right now and figure out what date I can plan this event.

There was a surprise party

...and it wasn't even a result of my impolitely requesting one right here on this blog.

Evidently, my Darling Husband began thinking about this, and told my parents to plan for it, LAST year around my birthday. He is so smart. And kind. And good.

Through all the stress of moving he has also been coordinating this.

It was wonderful, of course. He rented a space, even, and sent Evites to my friends for whom he had to go digging up email addresses. Even if I HAD known about it, which I did not, it was still SUPER surprising to see friends gathered at the top of the stairs, yelling, "Surprise!" (I laughed and burst into tears, naturally.) There were girlfriends from our kids' school (it's hard to know what to call these friends, btw; "school friends?" No... "Mom friends?" I don't know. Anyway, my current girlfriends whose kids attend my kids' school. Ha.), previous job friends, current job friends, friends from college (!), and Mom and Dad peeking through the crowd to ultimately surprise me all the way from Florida.

I.

Loved.

It.

There are only a few instances in life when a person gets to feel so beloved and special, and I'll float on this high of knowing people "like me, they really like me," for a long time to come. And anytime after that, if I'm feeling down. I'll never forget it. Black "Over the Hill" signs and all. I'm so happy for Shawn for pulling it off! He didn't tell the kids, so they were confused/surprised, as well, which I think is so fun. I racked up a lot of bottles of wine! Wooo! But really, more important, I was so, so happy. It was perfect.

So, hello FORTY. You're looking great so far.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

This week, summer has hit full stride. I mean, it's been stupid-busy since the kids got out of school because of the move. We haven't had a "regular" summer week yet - and maybe we won't at all, this year. Last week was hijacked by two things: One, I had a 2-day meeting on the other side of town, for which I stayed in a hotel, Monday-Tuesday. It felt really weird to have just moved into the house and then pack a bag to spend the night away from everyone, for work. (The meeting itself was mostly awful/boring, to boot.) Tuesday while I was away, Kate had a fever/headache and had to stay "home" from camp, i.e., at the office with Daddy. Wednesday she seemed to feel better, and it was a swimming day for her, so she went to camp. But that evening she was feverish again, so I kept her home with me TH, took her to the doc and she was diagnosed with strep. So we worked from home together again on Friday.

THIS week, Alex is at his Comic Book Art & Manga camp at KSU. I'm so excited for him, ...and apprehensive. He's really wanting to learn some drawing techniques and loves everything about Manga. I know that if there are other kids in the class who are already excellent artists, he's going to feel "less than." This is just the way he is. But I hope, hope, hope he'll enjoy it and do well, and learn. We've had the "don't compare yourself to others" discussion but it's a tough lesson to ever learn (pretty sure I haven't fully learned it yet; pretty sure most adults never do).

NEXT week, they're off to Pensacola for a week with the grands and cousins. Then: BEACH WEEK!

Many reasons June is my favorite. ;)

Hosting, and other notes

I think I'm going to get to host something Christmas-y this year. Well, besides Christmas dinner and the Christmas/New Year's Holidays -- we're already hosting those. :) I am so happy. I think it's the perfect plan: Grandmommy and Papa Joe arriving on Christmas Day. It's actually our first Christmas (Santa) morning in our own home, with no guests. That, in itself, is exciting and a small blessing, I think. Having guests is lovely, too, but I'm happy about it just being us. And then later in the day, we'll have our favorite guests-who-aren't-guests, but who are family, to join us for a real Christmas Dinner, and the rest of the fun stuff about the holidays: sitting around, watching movies, enjoying time off, playing with new things, reading new books, napping, chatting, drinking yummy beverages and eating cookies. ;)

But BESIDES that hosting, I think I'm going to get to host my little group of mom buddies, next Friday night. Another woman had volunteered, but one of our group is allergic to cats (so am I), and she asked if we could not go to that friend's home. (No offense.) So I volunteered. It's an easy potluck and BYOB, so as long as I can keep the place relatively straightened up, and it's already pretty straight because of Christmas decorating, I'm good to go. I love this group of girls, and like Swistle said, I definitely feel like it solidifies my place among them to host something. I've been wanting to -- I don't know why I don't ever send that email to INSTIGATE a get-together. Maybe after this I'll feel like I can.

I would love to do a "whole families" party, too, and not just the moms -- but I just don't think our house is big enough for that. Not in the winter, when the back deck is unavailable. This is yet another reason I'd like to try to find a new home. I really like having parties, and being stifled by the lack of space is hard.

------

The "other notes" are harder. We're still having a hard time with Kate. That's all I want to say. I wish I could make it funny, like all the bloggers do. I wish I could laugh and say, "She's like a tiny drunk, one minute saying one thing (GET ME A SNACK!), and then next minute, the exact opposite (NO! DON'T TOUCH MY SNACK BOWL!"), and expecting me to believe both hahaha, isn't it hysterical, how illogical they are!" But it has become less funny. I'm seriously considering the question, "Where would I even buy a lump of coal?"  (...was that funny?)

Bless her. I pray for her so much. I pray for me. She gets her flaring temper from both her father and, I've learned, from me. I pray for Alex, who loses out. I pray for Shawn who has to deal with her irrational emotions, and then feel bad for mine. I have extremely HIGH expectations of my kids because that's the standard I was raised by, and I met it. I WAS A PERFECT CHILD. ;) (Really, I was.) I wouldn't have DREAMED of telling my mother she was stupid or bad or any of the things Kate says to me on a daily basis. But I need to let GO of those expectations. Every single one.

And yet, she's still so sweet when she decides to be. Today there was a glimmer of hope when she apologized to me for "being bad," with no prompting (that I know of). That's a tiny speck of hope. (and also breaks my heart)

I've said too much. Just... Mom, say a prayer for us. Say a prayer that this will be the worst of it and the teenage years will be a breeze. PLEASE, say that prayer. Because, Jesus.

A few ideas

I kinda would like to have some sort of celebration this summer.

I think my DH appreciates knowing these things, and being given a few ideas. I know it's not even Christmas yet -- I haven't given any ideas for Christmas (we're maybe skipping gifts this year). But I thought I'd put a bug in someone's ear. A

F   O   R   T   I   E   T   H

birthday is happening on a Wednesday in June 2014.

Here are the few ideas. We mustn't do all of them; I'd be thrilled with one:
  • A bottle of Veuve Cliquot
  • or a small family fondue or some-other-atypical party (maybe at the Melting Pot)
  • or a nice-sized party at our house (I'll even help cook and clean)
  • or a surprise party (wherein I do NOT have to help cook and clean) ;) -- is it a surprise if you ask for it?
  • or a weekend getaway, just the two of us?
  • or a day-trip or 1- or 2-night family trip somewhere fun/unusual/interesting?
Shhh. It feels wrong to say something, but then, I think I probably am better off saying something than feeling pouty if nothing at all were to happen. Normally I'd try NOT to be pouty, and say "It's FINE," but I don't think it would be so fine this year.

Of course for HIS 40th, Kate had pneumonia, I think we ate dinner at home, and I tried to frost a cake myself, which was cakewrecks.com worthy. Truly pathetic. :/ Not sure how to reconcile my guilt about that (he did have a surprise 35th), but I'll have to think about it another time. Hitting Publish before I wimp out....

Weekend friends

We went to some friends’ house last night for swimming and dinner. They have kids, a boy and a girl, right around our kids’ ages, and our kids play pretty well with theirs. They go to our church, and I got to know the mom/wife through choir. They’re perfectly nice. We had a fine time. But it just wasn’t emotionally satisfying in the way that I want our couple-friendships to be. It never is with these friends; they’re like us in some ways, and very much not like us in others. The word I came up with was warmth -- there just isn’t a lot of warmth among us. Not a lot of laughter. Okay, I’ll say this: we don’t really care for the husband as much as I like the wife. So there’s an imbalance, for one thing. I don’t think they’re tee-totallers but they don’t ever offer beer or wine, which I feel is sort-of odd for a Sunday afternoon in the summertime…. or, for anytime at a social gathering of adults. Is it weird for me to think that? I know alcohol isn’t necessary for a good time, but frankly this party could have used some loosening up. No matter – it is what it is, and I certainly don’t require alcohol for a good time (geez, now I’m all self-conscious that I brought it up). Anyway, I’m left wondering if the friendly warmth will develop over time (although we’ve been getting together with this couple, sporadically, for 5 years now), or if it just isn’t meant to be. Sigh. I’m trying.

On Friday night I had gone out with the school moms – a group of about 8 of us. We had a fantastic outing at an art workshop, where they coached us through painting a beach scene. I was pretty darn proud of mine, and it was fun to let the artist in me try something a little different.

But I thought, if I put as much effort into our couple-friendships as I do my girl-friendships, maybe we’d enjoy that aspect of our life a bit more. What we need, we were reminded last week, is to get together with W@lt and M@rti. They’re fun to be around, if a little off the wall. W is always cracking off-color jokes (he emailed DH last week and said, “I know this is a sperm of the moment idea, but…” GROAN) but is full of warmth and humor. His wife emigrated to the U.S. and is very interesting and sweet, and they parent similarly to our style (older girl, younger boy). It’s been a long time since we saw them. And Sherry and D. (Hi, Sherry!): Some of the nicest people I know (and also fun, warm!). And Mel and Jon. Okay, maybe I need to schedule a party. Friendships require tending, and I can see I need to get into the garden and get my hands dirty. (Plus it was a NY's resolution. Eek. 2011's half over!)

Life is an easy pasta dinner

Or, life should be an easy pasta dinner. I know that because I accomplished it last night along with a good start on one of my so-called Resolutions: A friend came over to eat dinner with us!

She did the easy part by suggesting we get together, and it was easier for me to say, "Sure, come up for dinner!" than to consider getting all of us downtown to her condo. But the meal was simple -- sun-dried tomato pasta with chicken, salad, and french bread -- and the company was so easy. She was my roommate before I got married and one of the best people I know. She's great with the kids (a teacher by trade), so when I start to feel awkward about how our lives have taken such different paths and what are we going to talk about now??... she doesn't mind letting the kids chat her up. She even left early, allowing us to get them bathed and in bed on-time. I'm unsure if she was aware of how helpful that was -- she couched it as "I have to get up early tomorrow," but she may just be THAT considerate. Note for any of you single ladies who visit your friends with kids: it's nice to leave early on a Sunday night.

KT has had a cough now for 3-4 weeks. Mostly at night. I'm almost certain that it's nothing, but that 2% unsure is instigating worries about pneumonia and I wouldn't want to let that sit and percolate. So to the Pediatrician we go, this afternoon. They'll say, "Has she had a fever?" No. "Any other symptoms?" No. Well, yes, nasal stuff 2 weeks ago. "Turn on a humidifier and call us if it worsens." But this is what we have to do.
